Silent Word Ministries depends upon churches and individuals to print materials, conduct missionary outreaches, and help in other ways. You can become involved in a variety of ways:
Come to SWM and get involved. Many people are surprised to discover that Silent Word Ministries relies on volunteers for much of what we do. Everyone at SWM is either a missionary or a volunteer. Missionaries have their own ministry, but assist in the office as they can. For example, Allen Snare, one of our Deaf missionaries, is our printer. When he is out in meetings, Jimmy Sharpton, a Deaf volunteer, takes his place and does the printing. Deaf and hearing volunteers bind booklets, do landscaping and maintenance, proofread, help send the Silent Word Newspaper, and much more. There have been as many as 40 volunteers assisting on “newspaper day.” We are very grateful for everyone who comes to help. As a volunteer, you can help us in your area of expertise — building, maintenance, graphic design, videography, proofreading, typing, and more. There is always much to do around SWM.
Volunteers also come from outside our area and stay for a longer time, assisting in various areas of ministry. Families have come for a working vacation, and have been a great help. Individuals can come to work at SWM and interact with the Deaf people here. Students can come for an internship to be trained in some area of deaf ministry. We prefer to use volunteers and interns in their area of expertise. Possibly you or someone you know should consider coming to help SWM on a short-term basis of a couple of days, one week, or one month. We will help you with training and you help us in an area of need. It is a win – win!
Ministry of Helps
An exciting, new program at SWM is our “Ministry of Helps.” This program is open for qualified people to assist SWM in their areas of expertise, or to assist needy deaf churches or churches with deaf ministries. Some under this program already have finances for living or are retired. Others can raise supplemental support for the time they are with us. This opportunity allows people who are not missionaries to assist in a missionary ministry on a longer-term basis. Ministry of helps is flexible and can be done by commuting to SWM, moving near SWM, or by helping from another location. Click here to learn more: Ministry of Helps Program.
Our missionary ministry relies upon churches and friends who share our desire to “go into all the [Deaf] world,” preaching the Gospel and teaching and training others. One of our main areas is literature. Equipment, supplies, manpower, and finances are required to produce literature and DVDs. Our goal is to keep costs low. Income from sales is put back into producing more materials. We have been blessed over the years with financial contributions and donations of equipment and supplies. Some have given toward special projects such as computers or video lighting. Others have donated working computers, monitors, printers, paper, or other needs. Here are some of the ways you can help by giving.
- Material/Supplies — Give non-cash gifts such as paper, equipment, office furniture, computers, video equipment, etc.
- Cash Donation — A one-time gift for Silent Word Ministries. Help us continue the work to which God has called us – giving the Gospel to Deaf people, then teaching and training them.
- Monthly Support — Become a monthly supporter of our unique missionary ministry to Deaf people.
- Sender’s Club — Give $15 every month specifically to help send the Silent Word Newspaper to thousands of Deaf people. The newspaper is published every 2 months — 6 times a year.
- Planned Giving — Remember SWM in your will. For example, the Merrill Chapel was built with matching funds from the estate of a Deaf-blind couple who named SWM in their will.
Does God want you to help SWM? Do you have equipment or supplies that could help? Would you be willing to volunteer for a day, a week, or month? Would you be interested in joining SWM under the Ministry of Helps? Your investment in this ministry is an investment in reaching and teaching Deaf people for the glory of God.
Thank you for considering our unique missionary deaf ministry.
