Sweet Sleep

Two words that could define this generation are “unrest” and “emptiness.” It seems there is also unrest and emptiness in sports as the season fades, among Democrats and Republicans during elections, in fads or fashions (FAD means For A Day),  in sensual pleasures or sin for a season. Solomon learned, “And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them, I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced in all my labour… I looked on all the works… and, behold, all was vanity(empty) and vexation of spirit” (Eccl. 2:10-11). As Solomon, you will also learn that the best things in life are not things. He learned that all things under the sun were empty without fulfillment (Eccl. 2:17;22). He sought satisfaction in all the wrong places.  He should have sought all things above the sun, not under the sun (Col. 3:1-2). Money buys books but not brains, food but not an appetite, cosmetics but not beauty, a house but not a home, medicine but not health, luxuries but not culture, fun but not happiness, a bed but not rest. There are nights that even the “Sleep Numbers,” or the “My Pillow Guy” cannot produce sweet sleep. Real rest is not found in good prescriptions, pillows, but from the Great Physician. The Lord said, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Matt. 11:28-30). This rest cannot be found in labors, but only from the Lord. He promises: “I will give you rest.” The condition is that you “come” and He “gives.” This promise is unlimited to “all” who will “come.” All includes you. You can swap your unrest and emptiness for His fulfillment and satisfaction. God can do for you what you cannot do for yourself. Also know that God has placed an unrest emptiness within you that only He can satisfy. “For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness” (Psa. 107:9). Do you have unrest and emptiness in your soul? Let the Lord satisfy your empty soul with His goodness. He promises: “When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid; yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet” (Prov. 3:24). When is the last time you really had “sweet sleep?” I have learned there is no substitute for the sweet sleep and peace God. Well, writing about this has made me drowsy… Good night everyone! Good night, “John Boy.” Yawn… hmm… aah… zzz sweet sleep. As Solomon, don’t seek all things under the sun, but seek all things above the sun because that is where you will find satisfaction, rest and sweet sleep. No God – No Sweet Sleep…Know God – Know Sweet Sleep.
