The Name of Jesus

“Wherefore God also hath highly exalted Him, and given Him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” – Philippians 2:9-11

In this generation, the name Jesus seems to “offend” some. The name Jesus is not to be mentioned in some public prayers. Notice the problem is not with Christianity but it is the name Jesus Christ which offends some people. For some public prayers preachers are told, “Do not use or close with the name Jesus.” Today, the world may reject and shun the name of Jesus, but “one day” every knee (every person) will bow and every tongue (all languages) will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. Christianity is not a religion, but it is a relationship with Jesus Christ. Without Christ there would be no Christianity. Most world religions do not have a personal relationship with their gods. They worship gods that have eyes that cannot see, and ears that cannot hear. Because they are made of stone and by man, they cannot respond (Deut. 4:28). Other religious leaders are now dead and cannot respond to those who worship them. Jesus Christ is not dead. He is alive, and you can personally know Him as your Lord and Saviour. He is just a prayer away.

Jesus is a name that is above every name! His name is above, greater than, and higher than the angels who are eternally the messengers of God. Jesus Christ is greater than Gabriel and Michael, the two highest angels of God. Even these great angels will bow to Jesus and call Him holy. His name is above, greater than, higher than all the great men of the past. George Washington was the first president of the United States. He truly was a great man. Abraham Lincoln was a very great president who made important decisions that saved our nation. In Bible days, there were great men as Abraham, Moses, John the Baptist, the disciples and Paul, but the greatest man ever to be born was Jesus Christ. “And she (Mary) shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call His name Jesus: for He shall save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). The angel from God told Joseph to name the baby “Jesus.” The name Jesus means Saviour. Jesus is His earthly name, meaning He is the Saviour of all people. Christ is His eternal heavenly name, meaning the Anointed One. The name Christ is used over three hundred times in the New Testament. Jesus is His name; Christ is His title. From the name Christ comes the name Christian. These two names, Jesus and Christ, mean that He is the God-Man. As a man, His earthly name is Jesus, but as God, His eternal name is Christ. What a wonderful nameJesus Christ, the Son of God!

Who Named Jesus? In Bible days the mother usually named the newborn babe. Sometimes, however, the father or others would name the babe. But Jesus was different. God sent His name by an angel. Jesus was named by God, His Heavenly Father. The angel spoke to Joseph in a dream saying, “…Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for He shall save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:20, 21). Jesus Christ was born to save people from their sins.

Jesus Christ was given many other names. In the Bible He has over 200 different names. Some of His names are: Lord, Saviour, Emmanuel, the King, Master, Redeemer, Messiah, Prince of Peace, the Judge, the Way, the Truth, the Light, the Life, the Word, the Door, the Lamb of God, Prince of Peace, and many, many more. Just a few names cannot describe the true meaning of the name Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Truly Jesus Christ has a name that is above every name! There is only one name by which people can be saved.

Only Jesus! In a revival in Kentucky I was preaching to both the hearing and Deaf in signs and voice. As I preached, I asked the question, “If you died today, would you go to Heaven?” A Deaf lady, age 69, raised her hand and signed, “Yes.” I then asked her, “Why?” She signed, “I keep the Ten Commandments and I read my Bible daily.” I signed, “Only Jesus can save you, not the Ten Commandments or Bible reading.” She then became angry and continued to sign as I preached. She looked at me and signed, “Only Jesus?” As I continued to preach to the hearing, I would nod my head to her, “Yes.” This happened several times. When I gave the invitation to come and be saved, the deaf lady stepped out and signed, “Now I understand, Only Jesus.” She prayed with me and was saved. Then she became angry again. I said, “What’s wrong?” She signed, “Why didn’t someone tell me before? If I had died, I would have gone to Hell.” Later as she was baptized, she stood up in the water, clapped her hands, smiled and signed, “Only Jesus, only Jesus!” One year later I returned to the church and this deaf lady ran to meet me. She kissed me on the cheek then signed, “Only Jesus!” There is a song, “Jesus is the sweetest name I know.” Others may reject Him, but you need to receive Him! “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).

Deaf friend, when you die, God will not ask if you are in a church, but if you are “in Christ?” God only sees two groups of people in the world today: those “In Christ,” and “those Without Christ.” I am not asking if you are in a church, but if you are “in Christ.” When the Lord returns, He returns only for those “in Christ” (I Thessalonians 4:13). Are you “in Christ“? Here is how to know you are “in Christ.” (1) Know that Jesus Christ died for your sins, He arose to forgive you and is now alive in Heaven waiting for you to receive Him as your Saviour (John 1:12). (2) Admit that you are a sinner and you cannot save yourself. You have sin and you will die without Christ (Romans 5:12). (3) Receive Jesus Christ, and turn from your sin to serve Him. Only Jesus can forgive your sin and save you (John 14:6). (4) After you receive Jesus Christ, know that you are saved according to the Scriptures. (5) Know that you are now “In Christ” and have the promise of eternal life in Heaven (John 10:28). There is no other name under heaven that will save you. One day as you enter Heaven, you can say, “Only Jesus! Only Jesus!

I now understand it is
“Only Jesus” – “I now receive Jesus Christ as my Saviour.”
