Deaf Missions in the Philippines

Introducing new SWM writer Bob Himes. Bob and Brenda Himes have been serving for over 30 years as missionaries to the Philippines from Bill Rice Missions in Murfreesboro, TN. His ministry, love, and “gift” is making the Gospel and Bible lessons simple to understand. Bob has developed methods to help all deaf at all levels to better understand the Bible. I appreciate Bob as he ministers to many who are “overlooked” or simply “neglected.” Bob will be sharing his methods in his article. Bob has established about 50 deaf ministries and conducts a “free” camp for the deaf. Hundreds of deaf are saved each year as Bob and Brenda minister to churches, Sign Classes, camps, and schools. Bob has written “Deaf Bible Dictionary” – New Testament and “Teaching Limited Language Deaf” both available from SWM. Welcome Bob. We look forward to your articles… Ted Camp.

Bob’s Testimony – “My family and I came to the Philippines in 1980.  Soon after, I met a deaf young man, Joshua (not his name).  Joshua was about 20 years old and had never been to school.  He could not read, write, or sign.  We began to teach him and others on Sunday afternoon.  I soon learned that normal signs and teaching methods would not work. As I worked with these people, I began to learn how Joshua and his friends communicated and how they learned. I began to apply these methods and Joshua and the others began to learn. After a few months, Joshua met me at the class.  He said, “I want Jesus,”  Joshua was saved that day.  Joshua continued to learn signs and is now a teacher in an elementary school in the Philippines.”

Our articles will share some of these methods so that other Joshuas of the world can also know Jesus Christ.
