What Is A Bible Missionary?
By Dr. Ted Camp – Reprinted from SWM SP08 Pamphlet
Bible missionaries are people sent by the Holy Spirit from the church to go on a mission to a particular place or people. The word missionary is not found in the Bible, but many were sent on a mission from God. Disciples were “followers” of the Lord, and the Apostles were “sent” personally from the Lord. Today, missionaries could be considered under the ministry of apostleship as “sent ones.” Naturally, missionaries are not personally eye witnesses of the Lord, but they are sent from the Holy Spirit to a special calling and people. I can personally testify that the Lord in 1966, sent me into the world of the deaf. – Ted Camp, SWM.
“…the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. and when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them,
they sent them away. So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost,” — Acts 13:2-5.
Missionaries are different from pastors, evangelists, and teachers, but at times, a missionary will function in all areas to fulfill his mission. Now, let’s study the principles of being a missionary. God does not call a junior child to drive the church bus, but He does have a plan for a junior to serve Him as a junior. A junior may be called as a missionary, but it will take years of training and adjusting until he functions as a missionary. A called missionary should slowly adjust and change his life to his calling and become a productive missionary sent on a mission from God. The missionary may do other things in daily life, but his primary goal and direction is to continually follow his God-given vision and called mission.
A Great Adjustment – A missionary must adjust to a new way of living by faith. A missionary must follow and forsake many things. The early disciples forsook their nets, plans, and parents to follow the Lord. A missionary must burn his past bridges so he cannot return. He must put his hand to the plow and go forward. A missionary is sent on a mission to fulfill the will of God. Adjust is a must! Former plans change immediately. The same as a person says, “I do.” His life will never be the same again. As a missionary follows, the Lord promises He will go before you and help make you become ________________ (Whatever you need to become) … As you follow Him you will learn that God can use ordinary people to do extraordinary things. The Lord uses what you have not what you do not hath (II Corinthians 8:12).
Be willing to put aside past plans and life. It is a life-time commitment.
Others will not understand your calling. You are a missionary by calling, not choice.
You did not earn it because of works. You are called to be faithful, not successful.
It is a family calling and all are involved. Continue even when you don’t understand.
God Sends Missionaries – Not everyone is called to be a missionary, but God still calls some. God’s sends certain ones to preach the Gospel into all the world. God places people in the ministry as it pleases Him, not you (1 Cor.12:18). A missionary (servant) can not choose his position or place. Missionaries are sent from both the church and the Holy Spirit.
Missionaries are still the “Sent Ones” from God!
