Much About Nothing

A retired couple talked about their day. She said, "What are you doing today?" He replied, "Nothing." She said, "That's what you did yesterday." He nodded, "I didn't get finished." Another man said, "I usually start doing nothing about 11:00 am." It has been said that the pastor is paid for doing good but deacons are good for nothing." The Bible says much about nothing. "I have nothing to glory of" (I Cor. 9:16).  "I be nothing" (II Cor. 12:11). "For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself" (Gal. 6:3). "Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory" (Phil. 2:3). "Without me ye can do nothing" (John 15:5). When you become nothing, then God can make you something. God creates something from nothing. D.L. Moody said, "Moses spent the first 40 years thinking he was a somebody. Next forty years thinking he was a nobody. His last forty years learning that God can use a nobody to become a somebody."  "Nothing" means "no-thing." Ten or ten thousand nothings is still nothing.  Nothing is a big fat zero.  One hundred zeros are still zero. Nothing is zilch, zero, nada, nil or no-thing.  Nothing is nothing! God is looking for a nobody to tell everybody about somebody. It has been said that success spoils more people than failure. You should shun and avoid complimentary vain nothingness words. You should fear that you can rob God of His glory. Realize that the best of man is still only a man. You should pause and consider where or what you might have been, if God had not saved you. Remember, the way up is down. Pride goes before a fall. When you become nothing then you are usable of God. God is nothing more than a glorified junk dealer. God takes something that is nothing and transforms it for His glory. God is the world's greatest "extreme makeover" producer. It is amazing that God can use ordinary people, who are nothing, to do extraordinary things. People should be able to look at you and say, "See what God hath done! God's image should be upon you. Others may be paid for being good but you should be good for nothing. This week practice the principle of avoiding credits and compliments and seek to glorify the Lord. Seek to be good for nothing.

Don't Read This Article

As I read my morning devotion I was puzzled when the Lord told the blind men to be silent and tell no one what He did, but they did the opposite. Was He using reverse psychology, or just using His wisdom about human nature? It seems when you tell someone not to do something that is immediately what they want to do it. You can tell others not to tell your secret to anyone, but do they do it? Well, does it work?  I have learned that most people tell you not to tell anyone so they can tell everyone. These blind men did the opposite of what the Lord asked. "And their eyes were opened; and Jesus straitly charged them, saying, See that no man know it. But they, when they were departed, spread abroad his fame in all that country" (Matthew 9:31-31). You tell children, "Don't touch that." But what do they instantly want to do?  "Don't play in the road" so they immediately play as close to the road as possible. It seems the opposite works with human nature. When you tell a man not to lift that because it is too heavy? What does he immediately seek to do? Does "don't" create an instant desire to disobey and do it? The Lord told Adam not to eat of the fruit of the one tree. Adam had all the other trees but the "one" forbidden tree became the focus of their attention.  The results you know. It did not work! When I am driving and see a dead animal splattered on the road and say, "Don't look!" What do you think everyone in the car does. Other examples: "Don't touch the wet paint." "Don't walk on the grass." "Don't walk." "Don't run." "Don't date that girl or boy?" "Don't watch that TV channel or program." One man said, "Up till ten years old I thought my first name was "Don't." It seems when you say "don't" that it creates "desire" to do it. People seem to do the opposite. Then I thought, wonder if I could use this in my ministry? What if I told people, "Don't pray for us!" What if we said, "Don't support us!" What if pastors said, "Stay away, don't come to church this Sunday." Well  I wrote, "Don't read this article." Did you read it? The point is made! So I close and beg you, "Don't pray for me today."  "Don't be nice and encourage others." "Don't have a positive attitude." "Don't serve God." "Don't do right." Don't do it!...
