The Highest Bidder
The bidding for lot No.21 began at $20 million. Subsequent
offers, in bids of $1 million, quickly drove the price beyond $50 million. In
ten minutes a a buyer purchased "Portrait of Dr. Gachet" for $82.5 million. It
was a record price for a piece of art. Vincent Van Gogh painted Dr. Gachet, his
physician, six weeks before committing suicide in 1890. Bids are also made for
many other items. Baseball cards go for thousands of dollars. A rare card of
Honus Wagner, one of the early greats, now sells for $100,000. Mickey Mantle's
rookie card goes for several thousand dollars.
Everyone has something more valuable than any collector's
keepsake. It is your soul. The Bible says,
"For what shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world, and lose
his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?" (Mark
8:36-37). There is a bid for your soul. The Devil bids
this world and its pleasures, and the end is destruction. God bids peace, rest,
eternal life and the end will be blessed. The bids are made, but you must decide
who will give the final winning bid.
Many years ago there was an auction and many things were
being sold. It so happened the Queen had her chariot stop to watch. At that time
a preacher saw the opportunity. He jumped upon the platform and yelled, "What am
I bid for your soul?" He then said, "3 thousand, 4 thousand from the Devil, then
5 thousand from God, then six thousand from the Devil." The preacher then
pointed to the Queen and said, "What am I bid for your soul?" The Queen wept
under conviction and prayed in the chariot to be saved. She realized that the
Devil had her soul and turned to God. The greatest gamblers in the world are not
in Reno, but the person who gambles every day that lives when he could die
unsaved. Dear friend, "What am I bid for your soul?" What is stopping you from
being saved? [TGC]
