Weekly Devotion - #40
Read: Matthew 27:26-35
River of Forgiveness
Some of the most awesome times I have had in my
travels were the times I saw the Giant Red Forest in California, the Grand
Canyon in Arizona and Niagara Falls in New York. At the falls I asked those with
me to just leave me alone for a while as I looked and listened to the roar of
the Falls. I could only say, "Look what God has done."
Niagara Falls on the border of the USA and
Canada, plunges 160 feet into a thundering, surging river. At the brink, 379,000
tons of water a minute rush over the edge. Niagara, however, is not the largest
waterfall in the world. There is another waterfall in Africa, Victoria Falls
which is 355-feet high. Victoria is twice as high and twice as wide as Niagara.
But there is another waterfall which dwarfs Niagara and Victoria. Angel Falls
in Venezuela drops 3,212 feet and is 20 times higher than Niagara!
But the greatest "falls" ever known to man
is not from Niagara, Victoria or Angel Falls but from the place called Golgotha,
"And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha...they crucified him"
(Matthew 27:33-35). From this hill flows a crimson river that has been flowing
for close to 2,000 years. This "falls" is know as, "Calvary."
There is a river flowing from Calvary that is greater than all other "falls."
Why? Because this river has the power to forgive the sins of mankind. Millions
have come to this river for cleansing and forgiveness. The blood of Jesus Christ
flows from Calvary to wash and forgive sins.
To those who are not saved, you can come to the
river of forgiveness, "Have mercy upon me, O God, according to your
lovingkindness; according to the multitude of your tender mercies, blot out my
transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin"
(Psalm 51:1-3).
To the Christian, you can be cleansed by the
river of forgiveness. "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to
forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (I John
1:9). There is a red river that flows from Golgotha that will cleanse you and
forgive your sins. Do you need forgiveness? Then make a visit to the greatest
"falls" known to man, Calvary.
