Weekly Devotion - #33
Read: Ecclesiastes 4:1-12
We Need Each Other
"Two are better than one; because they have a
good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow:
but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help
him up. Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm
alone? And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold
cord is not quickly broken" (Ecclesiastes 4:11-12).
Alone is a lonely word. God has made us so that
we need each other. When a person is alone nothing can substitute for the
companionship of another person. The best TV programs become weary, food loses
its taste, and it is hard to laugh alone. People need people. Some try to
replace the need of others with pets and animals but it is just not the same. We
need each other, this is a fact. Two are better than one for if one falls there
is someone there to help him up. Someone to encourage and help. Someone to
communicate with about even the small things of life. Even on a cold night, how
can one be warn alone? It is referred to as, "Snuggle weather." Since we need
each other, we should appreciate those who are with us and help us. We need our
family to be strong and support each other. We need friends who will love us in
spite of ourselves. We need a good church with people who love and understand
us. We need each other.
There is the touching story of a Special Olympics
event some years ago. These were handicapped people trying their best to be
winners. They had been training for years for this special event. It came time
for five finalists to run the last big race. Each wanted to win. The gun was
fired and the race started. The crowd was standing and cheering. Suddenly one of
the runners stumbled and fell down. He struggled but because of his handicap he
could not get up. A silence went over the crowd as they watched him try to get
up. Finally, one of the runners looked back and saw the fallen runner. He slowed
down and then stopped. He returned to the fallen runner and reached down to
help. The two of them finished together as the crowd wept and cheered.
We can finish our race in this life as long as we
have family, friends and people who will pause to help us win the race.
