What's A Family For?
"And whether one member suffer, all the
members suffer with it...."--I Corinthians 12:1a.
When we put our faith in Jesus, we become members of God's
family. This gives us special kinship with our brothers and sisters in Christ.
That can be a wonderful support in times of suffering and sorrow.
I felt that special kinship in Christ during the spring of
1987. My sister Alice was dying of cancer 800 miles away. I could not be with
her during her final days. But I knew she would be well taken care of. She had
the loving care of her husband, their two sons and my parents. Alice was also
supported by the members of her church. They brought food, spent time with my
nephews, and comforted my brother-in-law.
Most touching to me, though, was what the assistant
pastor's wife did. During Alice's final moments, this "sister in the Lord" held
her hand and sang to her. When death came, my sister was lifted to Heaven on a
song. This woman had done what "family members" do best--she provided hope in
the darkest hour.
Look around in your church. Is there a hand that needs
holding? Does a new mother need a meal taken in or the laundry taken out? Can
you help an elderly person with some repairs? Maybe you won't have the
bittersweet experience of lifting someone to Heaven on a song, but your love in
action will bring joy to a brother or sister in Christ. Isn't that what family
is for? [JDB) [Used by permission from Our Daily Bread, Grand Rapids,
