Weekly Devotion - #8
Read: II Timothy 3:14 - 17
"Bible, Daddy!"
"Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is
old he will not depart from it"--Proverbs 22:6.
Children are precious gifts from God. It is a joy
to be a parent yet it is an awesome responsibility. I love to see children in
their Sunday school classes singing and learning Bible stories. From my own
childhood, I have many good memories. I had a wonderful Sunday school teacher.
It is good for children to go to Sunday school but it is even more important for
children to learn about God at home.
In our Scripture verses today, Paul talks about
Timothy. He said that from a child Timothy knew the Holy Scriptures. From II
Timothy 1:5 we can assume that Timothy's knowledge of the Scriptures began at
home from his grandmother and his mother. At home, from parents, is the best
place for children to begin to learn about God and His Word. This teaching
should begin early.
A few years ago we were at a farewell luncheon
for a family who was moving to another state. Several families attended and each
family brought food to share. We joined together to eat, fellowship and say
good-bye. I was sitting near one of the families who had a little girl named
Ashley. At that time she was not quite two years old. After we finished eating I
heard Ashley say to her dad, "Bible, Daddy!" Her mom said to her, "Not
here, at home." Ashley's mom explained that every day after lunch was the time
for their family devotion and daddy reads the Bible. That thrilled my heart.
Here was a little girl under the age of two who already had the habit formed in
her life to hear the Bible. From a child, Ashley will know the Scriptures
because her parents are training her in the way she should go. [FCC]
