Weekly Devotion - #5
He Leads The Way
"...The Lord thy God is He which goeth over
before thee..." --Deuteronomy 9:3b.
It is so wonderful to me that the Bible is
written in the present tense! It never talks about what the Lord did in the
past; always what He is doing now. God said, "I am with you," to Abraham and
Joseph; to Moses and Joshua; to David and Daniel; to Peter and Paul and John. He
says the same to you and me.
After my husband's death, I had to have surgery.
I was worried and concerned because I had never gone through such as this
without my husband's strength. I prayed to the Lord for a verse of Scripture to
help me. He gave me Deuteronomy 9:3b. What a comfort to me to know that the Lord
was leading the way.
The morning of the operation, I was made ready
and a strong young man came to roll me to the operating room. He was a very
joyous man and as he rolled me, he was singing a beautiful hymn. I kept saying
out loud, "The Lord goeth before me, the Lord goeth before me, the Lord goeth
before me." After a little bit the young man said, "No, Mrs. Rice, it's not the
Lord taking you to the operating room, it's me," and he gave his name.
Several years later, I was again at the hospital
because my granddaughter was having surgery. As her parents and I sat in the
waiting room, this same young man came walking down the hall. He looked in the
waiting room and saw me. He came walking in with a big smile on his face and
said, "There's that Mrs. Rice, the one that has the Lord taking her to the
operating room." I laughed and said, "You're right, the Lord was with me going
to the operating room and He is leading me still today."
In Psalm 23:2, it reminds us that He leads us.
Here again, this is in the present tense. It does not say He led in the past, or
He will lead in the future. He leads now. It is also personal. It says, "He
leads me." So I need to keep my eyes on the Lord and "follow the leader,"
who leads me daily.
